Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Experiments

چکیده

The possibility of a non-zero value for neutron EDM continues to be of central importance in physics and cosmology. A non-zero neutron EDM would be a direct evidence for time-reversal symmetry violation. It also implies CP-violation under the assumption of CPT invariance. To date, only two examples of CP-violation have been found: decays of neutral K mesons and B mesons. CP-violation is believed to have occured during the Big Bang baryogenesis that led to the present matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. Although CP-violation observed in K and B meson decays can be incorporated phenomenologically within the Standard Model, the strength of the effect is not large enough to explain the matterantimatter asymmetry. It is likely that a full description of CP-violation would invoke non-standard models, many of which predict a neutron EDM large enough to be accessed experimentally1. Therefore, a sensitive measurement of the neutron EDM is of fundamental interest since it could identify new sources of CP-violation as well as physics beyond the Standard Model. In this article, we first review the history of neutron EDM experiments. The prospect for future neutron EDM experiments will then be presented. In particular, the status of proposed experiments using ultra cold neutrons at various laboratories will be discussed.

Cern{th/96{18 Implications of the Strange Spin of the Nucleon for the Neutron Electric Dipole Moment in Supersymmetric Theories

Supersymmetric model contributions to the neutron electric dipole moment arise via quark electric dipole moment operators, whose matrix elements are usually calculated using the Naive Quark Model (NQM). However, experiments indicate that the NQM does not describe well the quark contributions q to the nucleon spin, and so may provide misleading estimates of electric dipole operator matrix elemen...

A Lower Bound on the Neutron Electric Dipole Moment in the Weinberg Ansatz for Cp Violation*

We deduce a lower limit on the neutron electric dipole moment in the. Weinberg ansatz for CP violation. The resulting number is comparable to the existing experimental upper limit; this ansatz will therefore be critically tested by the next round of experiments using ultra-cold neutrons.

Search for an electric dipole moment of the neutron

The result of a search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron is presented. A short review of past experimental work and theoretical predictions introduces a discussion of the experimental method used in, and the results obtained by, the present work. The weighted mean of three separate groups of data gives (+0.4 + 1.5) X 10 "cm for the neutron's electric dipole moment. We conclude that ...

Comment on “A proposed method for measuring the electric dipole moment of the neutron using acceleration in an electric field gradient and ultracold neutron interferometry ”

We discuss the proposal of Freedman, Ringo and Dombeck [1] to search for the neutron electric dipole moment using the acceleration of neutrons in an inhomogeneous electric field followed by amplification of the resulting displacement by several methods involving spin independent interactions (gravity) or reflection from curved (spin independent) mirrors.

Constraints on CP violating four - fermion interactions

It has been shown that CP violating electron-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon interactions can induce atomic electric dipole moments and are therefore constrained from experimental data. We show that using the experimental upper bounds on neutron and electron electric dipole moments, one can also obtain constraints, in some cases better ones, on these interactions. In addition stringent constraints ...

Limits on CP Violation from Electric Dipole Moments

Searches for a permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) provide a unique constraint on violation of CP symmetry beyond the Standard Model. Recent experiments improved the limits on EDMs of Hg and the electron. Combined with the limit on the neutron EDM and recent advances in theoretical interpretation, they set very tight constraints on CP violation in Supersymmetry. Many new experimental ideas a...
